Before dinner in Provence

When you're invited to have lunch or dinner in a French home, the meal usually begins with an apéritif, abbreviated apéro (literally, "pre-dinner drink," but also refers to the food eaten at the same time). With your choice of drink and a variety of snacks, it's an enjoyable moment of chatting with the hosts and other guests before sitting down at the table.
The drinks vary; here are some typical options - at least in Provence:

champagne
fruit juice
martini (a brand of red or white vermouth)
pastis (anise-flavored liqueur)
soft drinks
fruit wine*
whiskey**

*You can buy things like walnut wine, orange wine, and lemon wine in wine stores, but many of our friends save money and follow tradition by making their own. These fruit wines are generally a mix of wine, grain alcohol, sugar, and fruit that have been left to marinate for a few weeks or months and that have a higher proof (strength of alcohol) than regular wine.

**Many French people seem to think that Americans are crazy about whiskey. One time, the woman who had invited us to lunch very proudly offered us a whiskey. She told us the story of her moment of panic upon realizing, in the hours before the meal, that she didn't have any. She was shocked to learn that my husband and I don't like whiskey at all. On another occasion, during lunch at our apartment, one of the guests gave us a bottle of whiskey (which we of course accepted without making a face).

> DESTITUER. Employés licenciés et réduits au chômage.

English Translation:

This week, I bought two hardcover dictionaries for the first time in 6 or 7 years. (I normally use dictionary software and online dictionaries.)

The 2010 edition of the Petit Larousse is celebrating the 120th birthday of la Semeuse ("the sower"), this dictionary's logo and a symbol of the French language. Her gift? 400 illustrations, created by 40 famous and not so famous French artists, which are scattered throughout the common noun section of the dictionary (and on the flyleaves).

I've always recommended the Petit Robert over the Petit Larousse, because the latter's definitions are less detailed. Robert is more serious, while Larousse is more playful - particularly this latest edition. But it seems that a lot of French people prefer the Larousse, to such an extent that the Robert publishers are trying to compete in this "family friendly" market by coming out with a new dictionary: le Dictionnaire Dixel.

Like the Larousse, Dixel (the name is a contraction of "dictionary" and "pixel") is an illustrated encyclopedic dictionary, but while Larousse separates common and proper nouns into two separate sections, Dixel combines them into a single one which is, in my opinion, much more convenient. Aside from that, Dixel offers the etymology of the word as well as examples, quotations, and synonyms, and the articles are more in depth than Larousse's but less than Robert's. In the end, Dixel, which offers access to the online dictionary with purchase of the book, fits nicely between the two "petits": Larousse and Robert. For example, here are the three definitions for "licencier":

LAnjutt...
